In their first outing Tony Harrison (28-2, 21KOs) slightly outpointed Jermell Charlo (31-1, 15KOs) to snatch his junior middleweight title back in December. The public consensus was that the outcome was highly controversial. Both fighters agreed to a rematch with both looking to eliminate any doubt of who truly deserves to be with the belt around their waist. This was the first loss of Charlo’s career. These two were to meet again as a headline for PBC on June 23rd but due to an injury Harrison had to withdraw.
Jorge Cota (28-3, 25KOs) will step up to replace Harrison. The Joshua-Ruiz fight taught us to never underestimate any opponent, and replacements can be very dangerous. Ruiz was a late replacement for Joshua and ended up dominating with 4 knockdowns in 7 rounds he ended Joshua’s rein at heavyweight to shock the world. Cota looks to do the same: shock the world. With 4 of his last 5 fights ending with his hand raised via stoppage, Cota may be able to pull an upset.
Charlo was looking to avenge his only loss via controversial decision against Harrison but now Cota stands in his way. A loss sometimes pushes fighters beyond their comfort level and they come back stronger, hungrier and more dangerous. Charlo will be looking to make a statement to let the division know it’s still all about the “Lions Only”.
Tune into FOX as PBC will present this fight live from Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
