On Saturday, July 20th at 9PM/ET, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas we will see the classic boxing motif of the older veteran superstar against the newer younger fighter or “Old Lion” vs “Young Lion” when Manny Pacquiao (60-7-2, 39KOs) and Keith Thurman (29-0, 22KOs) lace-up and square off against each other. This is definitely a recurring theme in boxing with one fighter at times on the way down from the top while the other is on the way up.
Thurman, the current super WBA welterweight champion, was the “one time” king at 147 but an injury that led to inactivity allowed others to step into a loaded division. This is a difficult challenge for Thurman. Thurman packs a lot of power and can box well with decent speed. The young lion has the youth and power but will it be enough for the veteran Manny Pacquiao?
Manny Pacquiao is an overachiever, the only 8 division world champion, he is also a senator as well as being the current regular WBA welterweight champion. Pacquiao is a 3 time fighter of the year as well as the Boxing Writers Association of America’s Fighter of the Decade. Not to mention his resume is filled with notable wins including Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, Adrien Broner and Juan Manuel Marquez. Keith Thurman may pack the bigger punch, have the youth, and be the bigger man but will it be enough? Pacqiuao is one of the best offensive fighters, a “stay busy” southpaw he uses angles while firing off fast combinations. He style can be overwhelming but he does tend to leave him self open at times when he begins to let his hands fly. If Thurman can stay cool under the pressure then maybe “one time” can time him.
The old warrior looks to prove that age ain’t nothing but a number while the young lion states he will “retire Pacquiao”. Both these champions will lay it all on the line to figure out who will be the new alpha! Tune in on FOX Sports PPV and dont miss out on the action!
