Gvozdyk vs Ngumbu: Showdown in South Philly

Oleksandr ” The Nail” Gvozydk (16-0, 13KOs) will face off against Doudou Ngumbu (33-8, 14KOs). The WBC and lineal light heavyweight champion Gvozdyk will be making the first defense of his title while Ngumbu will be making his first attempt at world title. This card is presented by Top Rank and will be streamed live from the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, PA on ESPN/ ESPN Deportes at 10PM ET on March 30th.

Gvozdyk is a tough light heavyweight who obtained a WBC interim title last march via a unanimous decision victory against Mehdi Amar. This put him in the “mandatory challenger” spot and Gvozdyk headed over to Quebec City to challenge for the full WBC title. Gvodyzk won his title by viciously knocking out the previous light heavyweight king Adonis ” Superman” Stevenson. The fight was a war that ended in the 11th round. Stevenson was hospitalized after the fight and put in a medically induced coma for several weeks due to severe traumatic brain injury sustained in this bout. Stevenson is slowly recovering and is starting to walk and talk on his own. Gvozdyk is a force to be reckoned with, dethroning long time light heavyweight king in such a brutal fashion.

Gvozdyk acknowledged that Ngumbu is a tough fighter who can’t be overlooked. Ngumbu also respects Gvozdyk, with his win over Stevenson but Ngumbu feels that he has more experience as a pro and this would be advantageous. Ngumbu is coming off a 12 round Majority decision over Yoann Kongolo who came into the fight undefeated. Ngumbu is a hungry fighting making his first attempt at a title and will be ready come fight night. New champ vs new challenger, who will be victorious? Tune in on March 30th to find out!
