Shawn Porter (29-2-1, 17KOs) looks to take on WBC mandatory Challenger Yordenis Ugas (23-3, 11KOs) in his first WBC title defense after beating Danny Garcia via unanimous decision to take the vacated belt that “One Time” welterweight king Keith Thurman was forced to relinquish after dealing with career halting injuries. The fight will take place at the Dignity Health Sports Park ( Formerly knows as the StubHub Center) in Carson, California.
Porter has stated that it has always been a dream to get the WBC title and know he looks to further his climb to the top of a loaded division. A win against Ugas will put him in line for the bigger, cream of the crop fights such as, Errol Spence Jr. , Terrance Crawford, Keith Thurman as well as a possible rematch with Danny Garcia. So many options at this elite level if he can get past this mandatory challenger. Shawn Porter has amassed notable wins against some of the best welterweights out there such as, Devon Alexander, Paulie Malignaggi, Adrien Broner, Andre Berto and Danny Garcia he has proven himself time and time again. Will Porter be too much for Ugas?
Porter stated that “Ugas is a strong, aggressive fighter who’s responsible with his defense. He’s a Cuban fighter and I know he wont waiver from that”. Porter looks to make the fight an aggressive one, push the pace and be on Ugas like the bulldog style he uses to force mistakes to exploit. Porter is very good using this bully style of pressure fighting. Ugas has nothing to lose and a lot to gain. A win over Porter may bump porter of the fast track replacing Ugas for the bigger fights with the top dogs at welterweight.
Both these fighters will bring their all. They look to continue the climb to the top of the division. Ugas was quoted as saying this fight will be “fight of the year contender”. This isn’t hard to believe when you know what these fighters have at stake and their warrior spirits. Tune in March 9th at 8p.m. ET/5p.m. PT on FOX and FOX Deportes to watch the fight live via PBC
