Sergey Kovalev (32-3-1, 28KOs) will fight for the WBO light heavyweight title when he rematches Eleider Alvarez (24-0, 12KOs) in Frisco, Texas on Feb. 2nd. at the Ford Center at The Star. This bout will be presented live by ESPN+ beginning at 12a.m.
Kovalev, with the help of new trainer Buddy McGirt, looks to prove that he is still “The Krusher” of the light heavyweight division. Although Kovalev doesn’t seem as unstoppable and has scary as he once was due to his two losses suffered at the hands of Andre Ward and his TKO loss against Alvarez in their first fight he still is dangerous. Despite his losses, which are only 3 out of 36 fights, Kovalev still has tremendous power and totes a record of 78% of his wins coming by way of knockout! Kovalev might have needed a new trainer to fine tune his skills. Kovalev is looking for redemption and will try to re-instill fear to those they oppose him in the light heavyweight division.
Alvarez is an undefeated fighter with only a 50% KO ratio and although was trailing kovalev on points on the judges scorecards in their first fight, he mannaged to rally in the later rounds knocking down Kovalev 3 times to claim victory via TKO. Alvarez looks to prove that it was not a fluke and they he is a force to be reckoned with in the light heavyweight division.
Also fighting on these card we have Oscar Valdez (24-0, 19KOs) who is coming off a unanimous decision win over Scott Quigg in which he fought through a tremendous battle, finishing the fight with a broken Jaw which had to be wired shut for two months. Valdez, who will be making his fifth defense of his WBO featherweight title has also been training under Canelo’s team with new trainer Eddy Reynoso. Valdez will be fighting Carmine Tommasone (19-0, 5KOs).
Undefeated lightweight rising star Teofimo Lopez (11-0, 9KOs) will fight Diego Magdaleno (31-2, 13KOs). This packed card will be a great night of fights to Texas. Tune into ESPN+ and don’t miss out on this great night of fights!
