Andrade’s Climb to Elite

January 18th Demetrius Andrade (26-0, 16KOs) will be fighting for the first time at MSG at the Hulu Theater when he puts his WBO middleweight title on the line against Artur Akavov (19-2, 8KOs). This card will also feature Amanda Serrano, The only Puerto Rican boxer to become a world champion in six different weight classes. Also fighting on the card is Chris Algieri and Jorge Linares. The undercard is scheduled to begin at 6:00PM ET with the main card beginning at 9:00PM which will be streamed on DAZN.

Andrade was is coming off a Unanimous decision win over a tough stand in, Walter Kautondokwa, a last minute replacement for Billy Joe Saunders who could not get licensed to fight due to a failed VADA test. Andrade has been looking to get bigger and better fights but seems to be avoided. This can change now that he is the WBO champ.

Akavov who ranks at number 8 by the WBO fought Saunders in a close and controversial fight in which some felt that Akavov did enough to beat Saunders. Akavov acknowledges that “Andrade is a better fighter than Saunders” and he looks to prove his worth in the middleweight division.

A win for Andrade will put him into a position to get those bigger fights he as been wanting with the top dogs in the middleweight division, that along with the WBO title we should see Andrade in some big fights this year as long as he secures this win. Akavov has everything to gain and nothing to lose, you can never count out a hungry boxer and he will come to fight on January 18th at MSG.
